Is a YouTube downloader safe? Most of the time the download itself is: an MP4 or MP3 file from a converter is very rarely where the danger is. The risk sits around it: pop-up ads, "allow notifications" prompts, fake download buttons and installers you never asked for. On October 29, 2026 we checked six popular YouTube downloader sites in Google's Safe Browsing tool, and all six came back "No unsafe content found". That's exactly why a clean scan isn't the whole answer.

What we checked, and what we found

We did not download anything from the sites below or click their ads. We looked them up in Google's Transparency Report, the same Safe Browsing data Chrome uses to show red warning pages.

A clean result means Google isn't seeing malware or phishing on that domain right now. It doesn't judge the ad networks a site loads, and each copy of a site (there are dozens of "y2mate" and "ytmp3" domains) has its own record.

So where does the danger come from?

Security write-ups about these sites all describe the same four things:

1. Pop-ups and new tabs. Clicking Convert or Download opens an ad. Some show fake "your device is infected" warnings.
2. Notification prompts. If you click Allow, the site can push spam alerts to your desktop or phone long after you leave.
3. Fake download buttons. Big buttons inside ads that look like the real one and lead to installers or browser extensions.
4. Files that aren't videos. A real download is MP4, WebM, M4A or MP3. A file ending in .exe, .apk, .dmg or .msi is a program.

Moonlock, the security team from MacPaw, puts it plainly about ytmp3: the site's own code is fine, but its pages push adware, pop-ups and redirects once you start a conversion.

The same six checks work for a YouTube Shorts downloader, and for any "safe YouTube downloader" a Reddit thread recommends: a tip from a stranger doesn't change what the site does once you click.

Already clicked something? How to undo it

• You allowed notifications: in Chrome go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Notifications and remove the site. On Android, Chrome → Settings → Site settings → Notifications.
• You installed an extension: open your browser's extensions page and remove anything you don't recognise.
• You opened a program file: uninstall it, then run Windows Security or your phone's built-in scan.

Is it legal to use a YouTube downloader?

YouTube's Terms of Service only allow downloads where YouTube shows a download button or the owner gives permission. Saving your own videos, Creative Commons videos and videos the creator lets you reuse is fine. Re-uploading someone else's video is not.
